You can't help but sense the world of dream and the subconscious at work while painting a place. My familiarity with literature is usually kept in check by pictures and music but once I recognized something in a piece of writing that linked ideas of dream, place, and landscape in a strangely tangible way. This link opens to the work of writer Robert Kelly and his suggestion to create a fuller notion of geography by including the dreams of places. With photographer Rick Mitchell and community-activist Laurie Ward, a conference inspired by Kelly's work was held in Lawrence, Kansas in 2001.
